Greetings! Welcome to the Captain's Cracktastic Crossovers.

What is this?

A loosely-run, continuing challenge to provoke as many of you as possible to take advantage (so to speak) of Captain Jack's time-travelling, omnisexual hotness by exploring the possibilities for crossing him over with characters from other fandoms.

Please feel free to spread the word about this community to your friends and any relevant communities.

How does it work?

Step 1: Pick a crossover fandom. It can be any fictional source -- book, movie, tv show, comic book, graphic novel, whatever. Post it here. The purpose of posting your choice is to give others a general idea of what's being written -- these aren't "claims" and they aren't exclusive.

If you need ideas or have ideas to share about fandoms that might make for good crossovers, read and share them here. More detailed orphaned plot ideas can be posted and read here.

Step 2: Write your story. It needs to be at least 1000 words and to feature Captain Jack as a major character. It can be any rating and of any genre (slash, het, gen).

Step 3: Post your story to this community with the following header:

Story Title:
Author Name/LJ:
Crossover Fandom:
Rating:

Start story here, behind a cut tag

That's all that's required. Notes and warnings are optional -- use your own judgment as to spoilers. You don't need to mark a story as gen, slash or het if you'd rather the audience made up its own mind, but you can include it in the note if you wish.

You can post your story anywhere else in the world you'd like, but to take full advantage of our indexing system, you need to actually post the story to the community, rather than linking to it on your own LJ. If you'd like comments to go to your LJ instead, that's fine. Set the post to disallow comments and include a link to the post in your journal plus ?mode=reply at the end of the story.

To make stories available to readers as completely as possible, we have a Completed Stories Table, and we're also making full use of memories and tags.

Please be specific with the crossover fandom, especially if it's a little more obscure, or shares an acronym with another fandom.

Step 4: Writers who complete stories can claim one of our beautiful banners, available here. You will also receive fame, fortune, good luck for the rest of your life, and complete earthly fulfillment.

Can I really choose anything as a crossover fandom?

Yes, as long as its a) a crossover and b) a fandom.

That means no stories with purely Doctor Who or Torchwood characters, but feel free to drag any of them along to your crossover fandom.

It also means your crossover fandom should be a clearly identifiable fictional source -- a book, movie, TV show, comic book, etc.

Does Captain Jack have to "go" to the crossover fandom?

Nope. If you want to bring Buffy and the gang to Torchwood, that's perfectly cool with us.

Can we use historical figures?

Yes, if they are part of an identifiable fictional source. So, Byron as he was portrayed in Highlander, or in the movie Haunted Summer? Yes. Just "Byron" the historical figure? No. Julius Caesar as he's portrayed in HBO's Rome, or in Xena, or in Colleen McCullough's books? Yes. Just "Caesar" the historical figure? No.

Does that mean no contemporary RPF/RPS?

Pretty much. There's a place for that, but it's not what this particular challenge is about, which is exploring the possibilities for Captain Jack in different fictional universes.

What about AU's?

Without getting too esoteric, Captain Jack has to be the Captain Jack of Doctor Who and Torchwood. So, if you mean an AU where Captain Jack was born a slave in ancient Greece and meets Alexander or Methos or Xena or whoever while he's growing up... well, no, that story isn't for this challenge. Captain Jack should be recognizably Captain Jack, whatever that means to you. There's plenty of latitude there, we just ask that you keep your story's premise within the spirit of the challenge.

What about entirely fantasy universes?

Hey, if you can find a way to get Captain Jack into Middle-earth, or Tigana, go for it. (But he shouldn't be *from* Middle-earth or Tigana... see above about AU's.)

Threesomes/moresomes?

Where?

Oh, you mean, is it okay? Are you kidding? Yes!

Can we crossover with more than one fandom?

Sure you can. If you want to write the novel-length epic where Captain Jack meets Scarlett O'Hara, Fox Mulder, Jean-Luc Picard, and that dude from Planet of the Apes, we will totally support you in your insanity brilliant inspiration.

Can we cross him over with other Captain Jacks?

You get bonus points.

If we write slash, does Captain Jack have to be one of the slashed characters?

No. Captain Jack has to be a main character in your story -- his role shouldn't be minor or a cameo. But hey, if you want to use him as a yenta for Jim and Blair, go right ahead.

Can I post my story as a WIP?

Sorry, but... no. You're absolutely welcome to post your entire story once its complete, but we don't do open-ended stories that might never see completion, or will be posted over a period of weeks or months (or longer).

Can I post my story in chapters, with separate posts for each chapter?

Yes, if it's too long for a single post, and if all the chapters are posted at roughly the same time. (Please see above re posting as a WIP.)

Please do not create separate posts for a bunch of short chapters. If your story is more than one post, it should be because it's at least within shouting distance of the size limit for LJ posts (roughly 65,000 characters).

If you do post in chapters, you need to do something to make it easy for readers to find all the parts of your story. Either: 1) create an index post with links to all the chapters, and include the link to the index post at the top of every chapter, or 2) put links to all chapters at the top of each chapter. If you have another method, that's fine, but it must be easy to find all the parts of your story.

I posted my story awhile ago. Why isn't it in the memories or on the completed stories list?

To be included in our indexing system, your story must be the following:

1) Complete
2) Posted to the [livejournal.com profile] vintagemilitary community
3) NOT be friends-locked
4) Include the following info in the header: Story Title, Author Name, Crossover Fandom, and Rating
5) Be a fictional-person crossover story including Captain Jack as a main character

These are the basic criteria for the community, and the mods reserve the right to delete stories that diverge from these guidelines in a major way. We won't delete your story because of something minor, like a bit of info missing from the header, but we might ask you to fix it so we can index it properly.

What if I need some ideas about possible crossover fandoms/characters? Or have some ideas I'd like to share?

Post them to this thread. We'll try to keep an updated, running list.

What if I have some more specific story ideas that I don't plan to write myself?

Post them to this thread and let some other writer adopt your orphan!

Doesn't the non-exclusive system mean we could end up with a lot of crossovers in one fandom?

Yes. If that's the worst thing that happens, we're okay with it. We'd rather see different interpretations of the same crossover fandom than see people disappointed because the fandom they really wanted to read a story about was claimed but never written.

Can I write more than one story?

You betcha!

Who is running this cracktastic show?

In the very broadest sense of the word, [livejournal.com profile] melina123 and [livejournal.com profile] basingstoke. But we are or will be bugging everyone we know who's ever run a fic challenge for advice, and there are quite a few of them, so despite our general cluelessness, we expect to muddle through.

Is there anything else I should know?

Yes. You must have fun. Because Captain Jack would want you to!

I have some other question.

Leave a comment here, we'll answer it!
